Living Wall Transforms Retail Shop Front

Carnaby Street, London

Commissioned by Shaftesbury Capital PLC, this living wall was designed to soften a new double-height roof extension on one of London’s most culturally iconic streets. Working closely with Brimelow McSweeney Architects, Scotscape developed a bold chevron planting pattern inspired by Carnaby Street’s 1960s heritage, delivering immediate visual impact while allowing shrubs and small trees to mature over time.

Installed using our large pocket system and bespoke panels, the living wall enhances biodiversity, helps trap pollutants and brings depth, colour and seasonal interest to this busy West End location, completed on time, on budget and without disrupting street-level footfall.

Scotscape designed and installed a 60m² interior living wall for Sytner Group’s new Jaguar Land Rover showroom, bringing biophilic design into the heart of the space. The wave-inspired wall features 2,940 plants selected for their ability to reduce particulate matter and harmful VOCs, while also improving acoustics and creating a calmer, more welcoming environment.

Exterior Living Wall for an Office Refurbishment and Development, London

Holbein Place, London SW1

As part of Grosvenor Britain and Ireland’s commitment to achieving a 100% biodiversity increase across their developments by 2030, Scotscape designed and installed two large living walls totalling 141m² on this refurbished office building near Sloane Square in London.

Working closely with Barr Gazetas architects and LloydBore Ecology, the planting was carefully developed through microclimate and sunlight studies to suit both shaded and sun-exposed elevations.

What is a Living Wall?

Living walls are an innovative way to introduce sustainable planting to vertical surfaces.

Our patented Fytotextile living wall system was introduced to the UK market in 2010 and has been designed to support long-term plant health. It is lightweight, flexible and can sustain a wide palette of plants, including mature shrubs and trees.

How do you water a living wall?

For interior living walls, you can simply water them yourself with a watering can. Exterior living walls are typically much larger and reach higher, and shouldn’t be watered yourself without specialist equipment.

We have developed a patented irrigation system for our living walls to take care of the watering for you. However, should you choose to water your living wall yourself, we can provide you with a water schedule that will take into account seasonality.

Do living walls create damp?

No, when properly installed by a professional team, your living wall won’t create any damp. If you suspect your living wall is creating damp, you should immediately get in touch with your living wall maintenance company or the company that installed your living wall. We can offer advice and remedial action to solve the issue.

How long does a living wall last?

A correctly designed living wall with a sensible plant choice that receives regular maintenance will last more than 25 years, subject to the 5 points below.

  • Maintenance – Regular watering, feeding, pruning, and plant replacement extend lifespan.
  • Plant Selection – Choosing the right plants for the location (sun, shade, wind exposure) ensures long-term health.
  • Irrigation System – A well-designed automated system with sensors prevents under or over-watering.
